Featuring an informative session targeting the health tourism sector, the panellists included Mohamed Al Mheiri, Director, Health Tourism Department, Dubai Health Authority; Shehzad Jamal, Partner, Healthcare and Education, Knight Frank Middle East; Dr. Mohaymen Abdelghany, CEO of Al Zahra Hospital, Dubai; Andre Daoud, CEO of Medcare Hospitals and Medical Centers, Dubai; and Joe Hawayek, Senior Director, Head of Health (MEA), Aetna. The Health Tourism Department announced its participation at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2019 in London as part of its continuing efforts to promote Dubai’s leading position as a globally recognised destination for health and wellness treatments. Dubai has maintained a steady growth in health tourism and continues to enhance the experience for patients and wellness tourists. According to the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), the emirate attracted 3,37,011 medical tourists in 2018 alone, who spent a combined value of AED 1.163 billion on treatments in the top leading specialties: Orthopedics, sports medicine, dermatology and skin care, dentistry and fertility treatments. The Health Tourism Department is promoting its 70 plus Dubai Health Experience (DXH) group members’ healthcare facilities in the key source markets including GCC, Europe, Africa, Russia and China. Medical tourism in Dubai reportedly yielded returns of around AED1.421 billion in 2016 against AED1.40 billion in 2015, with the number of incoming wellness tourist arrivals rising to 326,640 in 2016, a 9.5 per cent growth over the previous year, states Dubai Health Authority (DHA). The much-coveted potential boasted by Dubai, particularly at the medical level, has made the emirate a sought-after destination for recuperative tourism, commented Dr Layla Al Marzouqi, Director of the DHA Medical Tourism Council. She further added that the maximum number of wellness tourists visiting the medical facilities in Dubai from outside the country were aged between 25 years and 45 years, with orthopaedics, dermatology and ophthalmology being the medical specialties that were in maximum demand.
