Emirates opened the Dubai Airshow 2023 with a significant order for 95 additional wide-body aircraft, taking its total order book to 295 aircraft. Already the world’s biggest operator of wide-body passenger aircraft, Emirates has committed to additional Boeing 777-9s, 777-8s, and 787s, worth US$ 52 billion, to power its growth plans, maintain a modern efficient fleet, and deliver the best flying experience to its customers. In the presence of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and Deputy Ruler of Dubai and HH Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council; the orders were signed by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates airline and Group; with Stan Deal, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes; and Larry Culp, Chairman and CEO for GE, and CEO of GE Aerospace. HH Sheikh Ahmed said: “From day 1, Emirates’ business model has been to operate modern and efficient wide-body aircraft capable of carrying large numbers of travellers comfortably and safely, over long distances to and via Dubai. Today’s aircraft orders reflect that strategy. “These additional aircraft will enable Emirates to connect even more cities, supporting the Dubai economic agenda D33 set out by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to add 400 cities to Dubai’s foreign trade map over the next decade. By the early 2030s, we expect the Emirates fleet to be around 350-strong, connecting Dubai to even more cities around the world.” Emirates, already the world’s largest operator …

SAUDIA signed an agreement with GE Digital, to implement three solutions from its suite of aviation software. The deal was signed at a ceremony in Jeddah by Mr. Abdulgader Attiah, the Chief Data Officer in SAUDIA, and Mr. Rami Aynati, the Commercial General Manager – Europe, ME, and Africa for GE Digital’s Aviation Software team. Under the agreement, GE Digital will provide SAUDIA with three software solutions to optimize the Kingdom’s 77-year-old airline’s operations in line with its ambitious sustainability goals. GE Digital’s Fuel Insight is expected to help SAUDIA reduce its fuel costs and carbon emissions by better understanding its own data. The software is designed to visually merge actual flight data with intended flight plans, allowing analysts to drill down from macro trends to understand issues on a per-flight level. SAUDIA is focused on maintaining the highest level of safety by tracking and monitoring safety performance, optimizing practices and processes to minimize safety events, understanding fuel consumption trends over time, and recognizing potential savings associated with adopting sustainability best practices. GE Digital’s solution, Safety Insight, is designed to support SAUDIA in those initiatives. Finally, GE Digital’s FlightPulse® is designed to empower SAUDIA pilots with data-driven pre-flight and post flight self-briefings, enabling more informed decisions around fuel and safety. Mr. Abdulgader Attiah said, “SAUDIA’s significant investment in the latest, sophisticated technology from GE Digital is part of our strategy to operate in the most efficient way possible. From saving fuel and reducing carbon emissions to enabling our pilots to access their own flight performance data at any time, these new systems will ensure SAUDIA is making decisions based on precise, real-time data which integrates sustainability goals at every point.” …

Emirates has operated its first milestone demonstration flight on a Boeing 777-300ER, powering one of its engines with 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The flight took off from Dubai International Airport (DXB), and was commanded by Captain Fali Vajifdar and Captain Khalid Nasser Akram, flying for more than one hour over the Dubai coastline. The flight deck crew were accompanied by Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ Chief Operating Officer, and Captain Hassan Hammadi, Divisional Senior Vice President, Emirates Flight Operations. The demonstration flight powered by SAF holds particular significance as the UAE declares 2023 the ‘Year of Sustainability’. The year will showcase the UAE’s commitment to seek innovative solutions to challenges such as energy, climate change and other issues related to sustainability. The flight supports collective industry efforts to enable a future of 100% SAF flying and help advance the UAE’s sustainability objectives. Emirates’ demonstration flight, the first in the Middle East and North Africa to be powered by 100% SAF, supports broader efforts to reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions as the industry looks to scale up its use of SAF. The flights will also help to refine the playbook for future SAF demonstrations, and support future certification where 100% drop-in SAF fuel is approved for aircraft. Currently, SAF is approved for use in all aircraft, but only in blends of up to 50% with conventional jet fuel. Emirates worked alongside partners GE Aerospace, Boeing, Honeywell, Neste and Virent to procure and develop a blend of SAF that closely replicates the properties of conventional jet fuel. At each blend ratio, a host of chemical and physical fuel property measurements were carried out. After multiple lab tests and rigorous trials, they arrived at …
