Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) an initiative of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) outlines simple adjustments that residents can make to help keep the city operating as sustainably as possible during the period of lockdown. Building on the UAE’s #StayHome initiative, DTCM laid out 12 steps to sustainability, which are; Responsible consumption: purchase local produce to support local businesses and to minimise on the food miles each item has travelled to be delivered to your door; Meal Planning: Think ahead to avoid over buying or bulk purchases, consider the delivery drivers, remain conscious of food waste and be supportive of the community by only buying what you need. Maximise Natural Light: Turn the lights off in rooms that aren’t being used and open your curtains and windows for additional daylight and fresh air; Energy Conservation: Ensure that air conditioning units are only working in rooms that are being used, try to only run the dishwasher when it is full and only use one glass throughout the day, washing it once you’ve finished with it. Use water wisely: Support Dubai and educate your family members on conscious water usage; Concentration: Avoid distractions, set house rules for your family members to respect working time and don’t have the television on in the background if not being watched. Health and wellbeing: Remain active, and practice meditation to remain productive and to maintain a positive frame of mind, follow Yoga La Vie for live online sessions. Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) introduced its innovative Hospitality Sustainability Board Game to all hotels under the Jumeirah Group. Around 40 professionals from hotels under the Jumeirah Group and students of Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management participated in the event held on October 4. The Board Game is an important awareness tool of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) initiative launched by Dubai Tourism that aims to encourage hotels in the emirate to focus more on eco-friendly practices and efficiently manage their resources. More than 400 participants from over 150 establishments in Dubai played the game so far during events and roadshows organised by Dubai Tourism. The latest game was hosted by Peter Stubbs, Director of Compliance & HSE, Group & Corporate, Jumeirah Group while Solaiman Al Rifai, Senior Project Manager, Tourism Development and Investments, Dubai Tourism made a presentation on DST and explained the mechanics of the game. The Board Game was developed jointly with Emirates Wildlife Society-WWF, one of four key partners of DST initiative.

Hotels and desert camps in Dubai have just one more month to enter the 2017 Dubai Sustainable Tourism Awards. Part of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) initiative, the awards will recognise hotels and individuals who are adopting tangible measures to contribute to enhanced sustainability within the Emirate’s tourism sector. Establishments can enter the awards via the Dubai Sustainable Tourism website; nominations will close on September 14 and winners will be announced at a ceremony in mid-November. Inaugurated this year, the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Awards feature 20 categories; 13 main awards targeted towards different types of hospitality establishment, and seven special awards that recognise individuals who are true champions of sustainability. Winners of the seven special awards will be leaders and teams who truly embody the sustainability principles of DST, and who have inspired remarkable changes within their organisations. The awards criteria have been designed to meet the challenges outlined in Dubai’s Carbon Abatement Strategy; issued by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, this commits to reducing carbon emissions by 16 per cent by 2021. The awards also support the UAE’s Green Growth Strategy that aims to build an economic system that has sustainability at its core. These initiatives in turn, are in line with Dubai Plan 2021 and Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030. The deadline for hotels to enter the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Awards is September 14. This will be followed by an evaluation process and approval by the final DST committee to select the winners.
