TURESPAÑA and Netflix launch “Spain Travel Guide” and a short film competition to highlight the diversity of Spain through fiction

The growth of audiovisual productions in Spain has brought people from all over the world closer to the culture, heritage and wealth of this country. Assuming that great stories are a great way to travel, the Spanish Tourism Institute (TURESPAÑA) and Netflix have presented the “Spain Travel Guide” (a mosaic of stories that make up the essence of the country) in the Mugaritz space and the audiovisual competition «How would you say it is Spain without saying it?». Both initiatives emphasize how Spanish fiction promotes the Spain Brand at an international level.

The guide, produced in collaboration with ETHIC and the General Directorate of the Food Industry covers the 17 Autonomous Communities and the two Autonomous Cities through the stories and protagonists of each corner. «Spain Travel Guide» proposes an itinerary that includes the Spanish cultural, environmental and leisure wealth, in addition to its historical heritage. In a map format, it allows you to discover how the traditions (such as crafts, music or agriculture), the lifestyle and the capacity of Spanish society to offer unique experiences are reflected in many of the series and films produced for Netflix in Spain.

The central axis of this guide are the testimonies of the inhabitants themselves, thanks to whose stories a diverse tourism is discovered. Throughout its sections, a territory full of contrasts between its cities and its rural environments is reflected, in which culture, gastronomy, historical heritage, fashion, nature or sports are presented as surprising alternatives for those who want to explore the country in a different way.

The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of the Government of Spain, Reyes Maroto, has highlighted “that the collaboration of Turespaña with Netflix through this guide allows promoting film tourism that not only contributes to enhancing the settings in which the productions are shot, but rather reinforces, through the characters, the emotions and experiences that one comes across traveling virtually or personally. Watching Netflix series and movies we discover Spain, its landscapes, its traditions and above all, its people. An exciting country with infinite stories, ancient traditions, modern, cheerful, monumental, diverse and creative. A country with a lot of talent”.

«At Netflix and Turespaña we are convinced that the territory, the people and the culture are a fundamental part of the stories that are told, of the narration and the creative process; of the creation of audiovisual products that later become films and series. We hope that with this project we will be able to train and attend to the needs of our future creators and new audiovisual talents, and who knows, perhaps some of these stories will eventually become a success on our screens, and thus be able to value cultural heritage, traditions, geography, landscapes of many places in Spain», stated the Director General of TURESPAÑA, Miguel Sanz.

For her part, Bela Bajaria, Global Vice President of Netflix Content, highlighted how “fiction and stories connect us in a unique way, regardless of our age, origin or provenance”. She also highlighted that “enjoying local stories, created in other parts of the world, reinforces the affinity towards other countries and their cultures and influences us when traveling”.
